The Can-Am Indoor Football League is proud to announce the granting of a member franchise to an ownership group in Buffalo, New York headed by principal owners John Augustine and Bob Guenther who posted a $500,000 proof of financial assets document. The home venue of the new Buffalo team will be RiverWorks, 359 Ganson St, Buffalo, NY 14203.
The inaugural season of the CAnIFL includes teams from Burlington, Vermont; Baltimore, Maryland; Hartford, Connecticut: Manchester, New Hampshire; Rochester and Glens Falls, New York; Cleveland, Ohio; Reading, Pennsylvania; Niagara Falls, Ontario. Buffalo’s games will be televised on WUTV Fox 29 and their own YouTube channel. Regular season play begins on March 18.
Both Guenther and Augustine have storied football careers in the Buffalo area. Guenther was the offensive coordinator of the Minor-Pro Champion Buffalo Gladiators, a team that Augustine quarterbacked for 20 years. During that span Augustine was named League MVP 8 times as the Gladiators won multiple Championships and were named “Minor-Pro Team of the Decade” and “Team of the Turn of the Century.”
Augustine, a business teacher and coach at Lafayette High School, played in the European Professional Football League, was named All-American at Buffalo State College, is a Hall of Fame member of both Buffalo State and the JFK Touch Football League and holds virtually every Minor-Professional Football League passing record.
Guenther is a co-owner of Super Price Choppers, 1580 Genesee Street, and was a standout quarterback in high school, college and the JFK Touch Football League.
RiverWorks owner Earl Ketry will host a catered press conference on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, 3 pm at RiverWorks. At the conference, former Buffalo Bills Lou Piccone and Jeff Nixon will announce a $500 – “Name the Team Contest” and will later offer a $500 – “Create the Team Logo Contest.”
Can-Am Commissioner Lawrence Fisher (CFL, NCAA) and League President Tim Veins (NASCAR driver) will be on hand to make the formal announcement and join Augustine and Guenther for a Q & A session. Owners of the Canadian, Rochester and Glens Falls teams will also be on hand.
